What classes do we offer?

We offer weekly beginner and intermediate swing dance classes. We mostly teach the style called "Lindy Hop", which is an 8-count dance, but we do quite a bit of Charleston, some 6-count stuff, and many more fun things! It gets more and more fun as you learn more new things. Swing dance is very special, because unlike many ballroom dances, which are choreographed, dancing swing means improvising as you go!

This class is designed for people who are completely new to swing dancing (i.e. did NOT take the beginner class last semester etc.)

Beyond Basics
This is the transitional class between beginner and intermediate levels. If you took our beginner class last semester, taken a beginner lesson someplace else and/or just don't feel like a complete newbie, then this class is for you.

Intermediate
You have been dancing for quite a while/feel confident swing dancing. If you are unsure if this is for you, I will post a list of moves you should be comfortable with, to help you make a decision.

When are the classes?

Beginner class

Every Saturday, 7 - 8 pm, downstairs

Beyond Basics

Every Saturday, 7 - 8 pm, upstairs

Intermediate class

Every Saturday, 8:30 - 9:30 pm, downstairs

Make sure to come early (around 8:00 pm) to have a little social dance and warm up before the lesson!

Location

First Baptist Church
(near the corner of Oxford St. and South St.) (view map)

How much does it cost?

$12/student and $15/non-student for the entire semester.

We are a non-profit organization, and our instructors are volunteers. The membership fee covers expenses we have throughout the year, such as making nametags, organizing socials and workshops, etc.

The cheapest dance lesson in town is $10 an hour. We charge from 12 to 15 bucks a semester. Do the math!

Do I need a partner/special gear?

You positively definitely absolutely do not need a partner! That's the beauty of our classes. During each class every Lead gets to dance with every Follow, through a very clever system called... a circle! If you do have somebody special that you would like to bring to classes with you, it's cool, there are plenty of social dancing time in between two classes :D

Gear-wise, there is nothing special that you need. The dress-code for the classes is casual, so put on your jeans and a t-shirt, and go! Sometimes dancing gets fast, so I don't suggest wearing anything overly warm. Another good idea would be to get nice slippery shoes, to make your dancing a little smoother :P
